The pieces are just as quintessential to Figue's spirit: timeless, feminine and glamorous.
We sat down with founder, Emily Satloff, to hear more about what inspires her and what is next for Larkspur & Hawk.
What inspired you to start Larkspur & Hawk?
Ever since I was a child, I had a passion for antiques and learning about how objects from the past fit into their contemporary cultures and historical periods. Having followed a career path led by this passion, including jobs in museums, I founded Larkspur & Hawk in 1998. For the first 10 years, I sold antique jewelry and small decorative arts, mostly from the 18th century. It was my love of 18th century jewelry making techniques that inspired me to design modern jewelry and to organically pivot my business away from antiques toward contemporary design. This was a very natural evolution and one that never could have happened without my obsession and admiration for things made at least 200 years ago.
How would you style the jewelry with our pieces?
One of the best parts of designing jewelry collections is having the opportunity to see how clients interpret my designs for their personal styles. Sometimes as a designer, I inadvertently have tunnel vision and forget to allow my imagination to run wild in terms of incorporating Larkspur & Hawk pieces into my individual aesthetic. I have always loved wearing Figue and when we were offered the chance to pair our pieces with Figue’s resort campaign, I almost fainted from excitement because the brands share a mutual love of color and esotericism. I have enjoyed pushing boundaries with asymmetry in my designs, most obviously seen in our Sadie earring collections. However, with Stephanie’s incredible vision, she took this a step further in her styling by adding a very personal and artful way of mixing, matching, and layering our colors, design, and patterns with Figue’s. This is a long way of saying that I now try and replicate Stephanie’s aesthetic with my own Figue dresses.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about design, color, details, history, and problem solving. Mostly I am passionate about my vision and making sure that I am always connecting dots in order to convey a story through my design. If I don’t design pieces that reference my passions, then I am not fulfilled. Depending on the time of day, I am passionate about streaming series on Netflix and Amazon and I am passionate about my morning coffee (fresh brewed, black and in an Astier de Villatte ring mug).
Tell us 2 things people don’t know about you?
I am related to Marie Antoinette and I adore scent and have a very olfactory orientation (Frederic Malle Iris Poudre is my signature perfume).
What star sign are you?
Leo of course!
What is your favorite animal?
Domestic long hair cat (of the rescue variety). In particular my cats Clementine and Mojo.
Who is your dream person to have a meal with?
This sounds like a cliché, but it is true that my dream ‘people’ to dine with are my husband and two sons. Dining at home is dreamiest because then we are joined by our 2 cats, which makes for the liveliest conversations!
What is your biggest wish?
To hear animals’ thoughts so that I might learn to be a better human
What is your dream destination?
Emily’s Garden - It is a fantastical world illustrated in Larkspur & Hawk’s bespoke wallpaper collaboration with British artist Melissa White. In this garden, animals live harmoniously with each other and enjoy the fruits of humans’ labor, just as it should be!
What's next for Larkspur & Hawk?
In addition to the jewelry collections that we are best known for, we recently added a home division and are looking to expand on this exciting endeavor. We are also getting ready to launch our bespoke gold and gemstone animal rings. We work with clients to portray their favorite animals in gold, and the finished rings are not only beautiful, but they are talismanic.
